Enemies to Lovers
The heroine hates the hero on sight. The main characters may start out as enemies with either extreme hate or dislike actually hiding love and affection, but they end up overcoming that hate and falling in love.

Forced Proximity
The heroine finds herself stuck with the hero in a confined space. Eg. kidnapped, only one bed, road trip, roommates, trapped.

Friends to Lovers
The main characters, who have hitherto been friends, discover a growing attraction to each other. For the heroine, this is often a childhood friend who re-enters her life as an adult.

​
Grumpy/Sunshine
One main character is a bit of a grump in personality while the other main character is super happy, optimistic, and is just a ray of sunshine in everything they do.

​
Work Adversaries
The main characters are rivals at school or at work but end up falling in love with one another.
​
Fake Relationship
The main characters agree to start fake dating to carry on a fake relationship for beneficial reasons to one or both sides. In the process of faking their relationship in public, they end up falling in love.

Fated Mate/Soulmate
Soulmates are people who are fated to be together, usually romantically, sometimes through multiple lives and/or into the afterlife.
​
​
Mistaken/Secret Identity
A character keeps their involvement in the events of the plot secret from some or all of the other characters. Usually, they do this by creating a second, separate persona for themselves, which they use while participating in the plot. Reveal often seen as a betrayal, leading to "Was it all a lie?"

​
Morally Grey
This is a character who feels incredibly human — often, someone who tries to do right, fails and falls into bad tendencies. As a reader, you may not necessarily agree with the actions of a morally gray character, but you can see how their past experiences and inner moral compass compelled them toward those choices.

Dangerous heroine
FMC who is just as powerful, or more powerful than MMC and other characters and who is willing to use her powers to her advantage against them. Usually linked with being morally grey.
He Falls First
MMC falls first, and falls hard for FMC.

Slow-Burn
The romantic attraction between characters builds slowly over the course of a novel or series.
​
​
Alpha Male
The heroine must contend with a strong-willed, domineering, possessive, obsessive, hyper-masculine, successful and wealthy MMC.
They are driven, assertive, and in control of the world, except where their lover is concerned.
eg. Alpha Hero, Alpha-hole, Sweet Alpha

Marriage of Convenience
When the characters have to marry, even though they don't feel anything for each other, or in some cases, they happen to be perfect strangers. And then they fall in love.

Found Family
A group of characters find themselves united in a family-bond based on shared experiences, mutual understanding, and interpersonal connection.

Touch her and die
Also 'Who did this to you?' - MMC loses it when someone tries to, or does, hurt the FMC.
​

​
Beauty and the Beast
The male is usually a monster physically, capable of great rage and destruction. The female is kind, smart, and emotional. She brings out the best in him. She sees the good in him and the world; he smashes anything that threatens her into itty-bitty pieces.
